Turkey has taken in 15 Palestinians released by Israel as part of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Tuesday in Ankara.
The 15 people were issued visas in Cairo and brought to Turkiye, Fidan told reporters. He would not disclose the identities. The ceasefire agreement came into force on January 19.
It provides for 33 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza to be released in exchange for 1,904 Palestinian prisoners in a first phase over six weeks.
Some Palestinian inmates are sent abroad under the agreement due to the severity of their sentences. In addition to Turkiye, Egypt and Qatar will also “play a role” in taking in the released Palestinians, Fidan added on Tuesday. (DPA)
