THE Ministry of Public Health has received 31,000 applications electronically from 433 companies seeking permission for import or export of foodstuffs since the launch of the system in early April last year.
The system records all information on imported foods and facilitates control and tracking as soon as notifications of potential hazards are received. It also reduces chances of rejection, re-export and destruction of foods for violations of regulations.
The large turnout comes in the light of the success achieved by the system in reducing food refusals in the access ports and obtaining an initial guarantee that products meet the requirements of the regulations and to free products of additives unauthorized use.
The Ministry of Public Health is in the process of developing an integrated electronic food control system to ensure that food is tracked in the local market.
