NEW YORK: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has affirmed that the international organisation will continue to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their inalienable rights to live in peace, security and dignity.

In a post on the X platform, Guterres said: "On this day every year, the international community celebrates the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People."

Guterres has previously sharply criticised the Israeli war on Gaza, saying, "This is unimaginable. The level of suffering in Gaza, the level of death and destruction is unparalleled in anything I have seen since I became Secretary-General" in 2017.

On November 29 of each year, many events are held to commemorate the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which was approved by the United Nations in 1977.

This year, the occasion comes as Israel continues its war on the Gaza Strip for the 14th consecutive month, during which about 149,000 Palestinians, most of them children and women, have been killed and injured, amid massive destruction and famine that has killed dozens of children and elderly people.
