DPABrusselsThe European Union and other countries involved in the international nuclear deal with Iran are currently assessing Iran’s response to a compromise proposal, Nabila Massrali, a spokesperson for the EU’s foreign policy chief said on Tuesday.“For the moment we are studying it and we are consulting with the other [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] participants and the US on the way forward,” Massrali told journalists in Brussels.The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action aimed to prevent Tehran from building nuclear weapons came first into effect in 2015.In a diplomatic tour de force, representatives from the US and Iran, as well as other countries, had been trying to reach an agreement that would result in the removal of US sanctions and the reinstatement of restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear programme.These were the original goals of the 2015 pact known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which aimed to prevent Tehran from building nuclear weapons.In 2018 the United States, under then-President Donald Trump, decided to unilaterally leave the agreement.In a diplomatic tour de force, representatives from the US and Iran, as well as other countries, had been trying to revive the agreement in recent months.A potential deal would result in the removal of US sanctions and the reinstatement of restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear programme similar to the 2015 deal.Earlier on Tuesday the EU Commission confirmed the receipt of Iran’s answers to the compromise proposal which was finalised by the EU at the beginning of last week.An EU official spoke of a “very good compromise.” “What can be negotiated has been negotiated, and it’s now in a final text,” Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, tweeted on August 8th.Borrell added that “if these answers are positive, then we can sign this deal.” Borrell’s spokesperson on Tuesday did not provide further details, such as the content of the response or a possible timetable.
