MunichcTypeface:> Asia d’Amato became the second Italian to win women’s gymnastics all-around gold at the European championships after team-mate Martina Maggio dramatically fell at the final apparatus. D’Amato, 19, scored big at the concluding uneven bars to win the first gold medal omn offer at the multisports Euros in Munich with a tally of 54.732 points. Gold came after a vault silver at last year’s world championships and a team bronze at the 2019 worlds. The only other Italian winner of the all-around event at the Euros was Vanessa Ferrari in 2007. “Thanks a million everyone,” a tearful D’Amato said in Italian minutes after clinching her biggest career success. Britain’s Alice Kinsella took silver a week after Commonwealth Games team gold and a year after Olympic team bronze. Maggio had appeared to be set for gold until the final rotation when she fell on the uneven bars but her score was at least good enough for bronze. The Munich championships bring together some 4,700 athletes in nine sports who are competing for 177 gold medals until August 21. (DPA)
