PARIS: The Qatari beach volleyball team defeated its Australian counterpart on Thursday with two clean sets in the conclusion of its matches in the group stage within the competitions of the 33rd Summer Olympic Games - Paris 2024.
The Qatari team of Sherif Younes and Ahmed Tijan, who achieved their third consecutive victory beating the Australian duo of Mark Nikolaidis and Isaac Carrasher, outperformed them after ending the first half in their favour with a score of 21-14. In the second half, the Qatari team, the bronze medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, maintained its balance and showed distinctive defensive bravery and thwarted the Australian team’s attempts to come back in the match to end the second half in their favor with a score of 21-18.
The Qatari team topped Group 1 with a full score, securing a place in the round of 16.
The Qatari beach volleyball team started its journey in the Olympic Games with two consecutive wins, as the Qatari team defeated the Italian team, consisting of Paolo Nicolai and Samuele Cottava, in two clean sets, before defeating its Swedish counterpart, consisting of David Ahman and Jonathan Helvig, in two sets to one in its second match.
The first and second placed teams from each group qualify directly to the round of 16, in addition to the two best third-placed teams, bringing the total number of qualified teams to 14.
It is worth noting that this is the third consecutive participation of the Qatari team in the Olympic Games, as it aspires to achieve a new achievement to be added to its series of achievements on the continental and global levels, the most prominent of which is winning the gold medal in the Asian Games twice -- Jakarta and Palembang 2018, and Hangzhou 2022, in addition to the bronze medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
