The illegal siege imposed on Qatar has affected thousands of citizens and residents in Qatar and GCC countries because of the discriminatory and arbitrary measures of the blockading countries, National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Chairman Dr Ali bin Smaikh al Marri has said.
In a meeting with officials of the European Parliament and the European Union in Brussels, Marri said since the beginning of the crisis the NHRC has been working to defend the rights of those affected.
He told the officials that the international communities rejected the unjust blockade, calling for immediate halt to the violations.
The NHRC chief met communication officer to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs for Relations with Parliament, the Head of EU Directorate for Democracy Support, Director of the Gulf Cooperation Council to serve EU External Action, and Vice-Chairman of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with the Arabian Peninsula (DARP).
Marri is expected to speak in the first official hearing of the European Parliament, on the repercussions of the siege on Qatar, in the presence of members of the Sub-Commission on Human Rights, and a gathering of heads of diplomatic missions accredited to the European Union.
The hearing comes after the visit of an EU delegation to Doha recently, as well as another visit of the President of the Sub-Committee on Human Rights of the European Parliament Pier Antonio Panzeri in early April.
