DOHA:Qatar will be affected by fresh to strong Northerly winds from Wednesday which will continue during the weekend, the Qatar Meteorology Department has said.

The gusts will causeblowing dust at places and low horizontal visibility at times, the Met office cautioned in a social media post on Tuesday.

It also issued a marinewarning for the period as waves can range between 4 to 8 feet rising to 12 feet at times.

In an earlier social media post the Met office shed light on the Al Bawarih wind -- a well-known local term in the Gulf region that refers to a Northwesterly strong wind that results from the extension of Indian monsoon low over the region along with the presence of a high-pressure system over Northern Arabian Peninsula.

It usually starts blowing in May and continues until July.

The most important feature of the Al Bawarih wind is its gradual activity with sunrise reaching its peak during the afternoon, causing blowing dust and low horizontal visibility at times with low relative humidity as well as high sea waves.
