Islamabad: More than 1,000 families in Afghanistan’s central province of Ghor have been forced from their homes due to heavy rains and flooding in recent days, the country’s Ministry of Refugees said on Monday.

The floodwaters destroyed homes and farmlands, leaving many with nothing, the ministry added.

Afghan broadcaster TOLOnews, citing the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), reported on Sunday that at least 14 people had died due to flooding across the country.

In recent months, Afghanistan has seen heavy snow and rainfall, causing deaths and injuries following an unusually mild winter.

Meteorologists warn that extreme weather events such as floods and droughts are becoming more frequent in Afghanistan and Pakistan due to climate change. (DPA)
