A Qatari delegation, led by Engineer Ahmad Abdulla Al Muslemani, president of the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA), participated in the first regular session of the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) Council of Administration (CA) meeting of 2024. This delegation included representatives from CRA and Qatar Postal Services Company (Qatar Post). The meeting was held at the UPU International Bureau (IB) in Berne, Switzerland from April 29 to May 3.
Qatar participated in the meeting as a board member of the CA, which consists of 41 member countries and meets annually in Berne, Switzerland to discuss various issues related to the postal sector and the UPU.
The CA meeting included discussions about the CA work programme 2022-2025 and the 28th Universal Postal Congress, scheduled for 2025. Additionally, the meeting addressed several topics related to the CA Management Committee, the Consultative Committee, and other committees under the CA, such as the Governance and Management of the Union Committee, the Postal Policy and Regulation Committee, the Strategy, Postal Economics and Markets Committee, and the Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance Committee.
On the sidelines of the CA meeting, Eng AlMuslemani met with Masahiko Metoki, director general of the UPU, and Marjan Osvald, Deputy Director General of the UPU. The meetings focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation between the State of Qatar and the UPU, aimed at contributing to the sustainable development of the global postal sector.
Furthermore, Qatar co-chaired, with the Republic of Belarus, the Development Cooperation and Technical Assistance Committee meeting on May 2. The meeting’s agenda included discussions about various issues related to the Committee, which considers and implements Universal Postal Congress decisions concerning technical cooperation among member countries. During the meeting, the participants reviewed reports, presentations, and memorandums on a variety of topics, including the UPU Global Development Cooperation Strategy for 2022-2025.
Through these meetings, Qatar contributes to shaping the future of the global postal sector for the better, which will have a direct effect on the development of the postal sector in Qatar and other local sectors associated with postal services. Thus, consumers will receive more advanced and high-quality postal services, which supports the goals of the Third Qatar National Development Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030. It is worth noting that Qatar issued the Law Regulating Postal Services last year, which will contribute to the improvement of services provided in line with the latest international developments, technology, and sector regulating legislations.
The UPU is the primary forum for cooperation between postal sector players and has 192 member countries.
