The death toll in recent floods in Kenya has risen to 228, authorities said on Sunday.

Nine people have died since Saturday and a total of 223,198 people have been affected, with 163,000 evacuated so far, government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said. The capital of Nairobi has been the hardest hit by the floods, he added.

The government announced plans on Saturday for a “holistic approach” to mitigating the effects of the floods amid warnings that Cyclone Hidaya could still hit the country’s coastal areas.

However, the Tanzanian Meteorological Association (TMA) announced the end of the threat from the tropical storm after it made landfall on a nearby island late Saturday, and weakened. “The cyclone lost its strength and direction after hitting Mafia Island yesterday. So far it has degenerated and it is no longer a threat to Tanzania,” the TMA said.
