Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, 46, has sparked a debate on people’s behaviour on social media by publishing several hate messages that she said she had received herself.

The harsh tone on social media is nothing new, she wrote on Instagram on Sunday, mentioning in particular: “Harassment, sexism, abuse, hate and threats.”

Unfortunately, this is part of everyday life for many, which she said worries her deeply.

Frederiksen spoke of young people who take part in casting shows and receive racist and hateful messages, of journalists, researchers and civil servants who are threatened, of athletes and politicians. She herself has recently received many hate messages and threats, she continued - and to an extent that she had never experienced before.

As head of government, you naturally need a high level of tolerance, but there are comments that are so violent that nobody should tolerate them,

she said.
