DOHA: Many parts of Qatar received rain, accompanied by thunder and strong winds, on Tuesday, with the Qatar Meteorology Department (QMD) warning of scattered rain on Wednesday.

The total amount of rain reached 45ml at places in northern areas of the country and the rain was accompanied by hail and strong wind exceeding 20 knots, the Qatar Meteorology Department (QMD) said. The western parts of the country too experienced showers.

The Met office also said strong wind was observed over southern parts of the country and the horizontal visibility was less than 3km.

The weather department said the weatherinshore on Tuesday tonightwill be "dusty and partly cloudy to cloudy with scattered rain, heavy thundery rain associated with blowing dust at times".

“The weather will be cloudy with a chance of moderate to heavy rains accompanied by thunder and strong wind until the beginning of Wednesday. During this period, the wind with gusts exceeding 50KT could also be accompanied by hail,” the QMD said earlier.

Strong winds were also predicted to exceed 50 knots with a chance of hail.

"Sea state will be rough where the sea waves ranging between 10-12ft rising to 16ft at times," QMD added.

It urged the public to take care and follow safety instructions during thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, the Public Works Authority 'Ashghal' said its emergency teams were ready for any rain-related incident in Qatar.

On Tuesday employees in all ministries, government agencies, public bodies, and institutions as well as banks and several private institutions adoptedremote work given the exceptional weather conditions the country was expected to witness.

Schools in Qatar also switched to online education mode on Tuesday.
