Berlin: Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann is a candidate at his former club Bayern Munich to replace Thomas Tuchel from summer, the Bild newspaper reported on Saturday. According to Bild, Bayern board member for sports Max Eberl already had initial talks with Nagelsmann about a possible comeback to the German record champions. The now Germany coach was dismissed by Bayern in March 2023 and replaced by Tuchel, who has already announced he will part ways with the club after the end of the season. Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso was Bayern’s favourite candidate, but he announced on Friday that he will stay at Leverkusen next season. Nagelsmann, meanwhile, has a contract to coach Germany until the Euro 2024 on home soil from June 14 to July 14. It’s unclear whether the German Football Federation (DFB) will extend his deal, but the body is open to offer him a new contract. Nagelsmann started the job at the national team with a win against the United States and a draw with Mexico before ending 2023 with two consecutive defeats to Turkey and Austria. (dpa)
