MadridcTypeface:> Former Barcelona and Brazil defender Daniel Alves is to be conditionally released from jail after he paid bail of ?1 million ($1.08 million), a spokesperson for the Spanish judiciary told dpa on Monday. Last month, Alves was sentenced to four years and six months in prison by a Spanish court for sexual assault. He was found guilty of assaulting a woman in the bathroom of an upscale Barcelona nightclub on New Year’s Eve in 2022 and has been in custody since being arrested for the offence in January 2023. But last week, the Spanish court ruled that Alves could be conditionally released from jail after serving about a quarter of his sentence and on Monday, he was allowed to leave jail pending his appeal, after he made the stated bail. The conditions for his release include turning over both his Brazilian and Spanish passports so he cannot leave Spain. Alves must also appear before the court on a weekly basis. According to media reports, Alves had difficulties putting together the required bail. His father, however, denied reports that his compatriot Neymar would lend him money. (dpa)
