Qatar University’s (QU) Young Scientists Centre (YSC) has launched the second cycle of its ‘STEM in Sports’ workshop, tailored for high school students in Qatar’s public schools. The workshop is being held in four government schools, with approximately 100 students participating in this cycle following the remarkable success of the first cycle designed for preparatory school students.

Aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030, the workshop aims to enhance students’ knowledge and skills in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. The main objective is to contribute to the national development strategy by equipping young students with the knowledge and skills necessary for Qatar’s progress towards a knowledge-based, innovative, and inventive economy. This involves nurturing young talents in STEM fields. The workshop’s intensive activities are designed to explore the relationship between technology and sports, with a focus on modern technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI).

The workshop emphasizes hands-on activities; students learn about the latest technologies and can apply them. As part of the workshop, students will present AI-based projects to address challenges and problems in the sports field. This project will allow students to combine their theoretical knowledge with their practical skills, leading to the development of innovative and practical solutions.

One of the main highlights of these workshops is that students get the opportunity to learn and apply cutting-edge technology, such as 3D printing, for creating innovative sports equipment. This approach provides students with hands-on experience in modern technology. Additionally, the students will visit the YSC lab at QU for practical training on 3D printing. Students are also assigned to design and produce 3D models and PowerPoint presentations, which will be presented in a final event. The goal of the competition is to recognize the most creative and high-quality projects.

YSC Director Prof Noora Jabor Al-Thani expressed her delight at the launch of the second cycle of the workshop. She emphasized that the workshop is an important step towards achieving Qatar National Vision 2030 and offers students a unique opportunity to develop their passion and skills in STEM fields, especially by using AI tackle sports-related problems. This plays a crucial role in shaping the future of science and technology.

Prof Noora Al-Thani added that the YSC is committed to providing an exceptional educational platform that helps students reach the highest levels of excellence in these vital fields. This commitment enhances their roles as active members and future leaders in society.
