While Qatar has announced a three-phase plan to gradually bring students back to schools starting September, a senior health official has said that a final decision on it would be taken only after evaluating the full spectrum of the benefits and the risks.
“There will undoubtedly be a clear decision on September 1,” Sheikh Dr Muhammad bin Hamad Al Thani, the Director of the Public Health Department at the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH), has said.
Dr Thani said the Ministry of Education and Higher Education is currently working on a plan to assess the risks involved in returning students to schools.
The official suggested that the possibilities could swing from postponing in-person classes to a full resumption of school activities, and the decision depended on the awareness among the students.
He said conducting in-person classes every alternate week or restricting them only for senior classes could also be an option.
The commitment of schools and sufficient awareness among the students on how to avoid the infection would be key factors influencing Qatar’s decision to reopen the schools, he added.
A nationwide closure of schools and universities came into effect in Qatar on March 10 as more people started getting infected with the coronavirus after the first reported outbreak in the country in February.
Towards the end of July, Qatar announced a three-phase tentative plan to bring students back to school from September 1.
