Increased social gatherings and family assemblies amid reduced caution against COVID-19 transmission risks during Eid Al Adha have led to a greater increase in new infections than those that happened during Eid Al Fitr, Chair of the National Strategic Group on COVID-19 Dr Abdullatif Al Khal said on Thursday.
Addressing a press conference, he said the infections during Eid Al Adha were mostly recorded among citizens and expatriate professionals.
“Because many community members do not adhere to preventive measures during family visits and social gatherings during the Eid Al-Adha period, an increase in the number of new infections has recently been observed after a period of decline,” Dr Khal said.
New infections in Qatar increased after a period of decline due to the Eid Al-Adha holiday and failure to comply with preventive measures during family visits and social gatherings, he added.
Dr Khal reminded that virus transmission within families (member to member) has led to several deaths in Qatar.
The rate of positive examination for every hundred cases reached 35 percent during the peak and decreased at the beginning of the month to 5 percent before it increased slightly, he noted.
“Adolescents and youth are the most common group among which the virus is currently spreading due to family visits,” he added.
