Two hundred trees, a hiking trail, 1.5-km cycle lanes and 900-metre jogging tracks: these are some of the features of a 13,600 square-metre plaza that is going to come up in West Bay next to the Q-Post building towards the end of 2020.
Ashghal, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has allocated land for the construction of the plaza that will serve as area for residents and visitors to gather for civic and leisure purposes.
The Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar at the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has started implementation of construction works at the plaza project. 
It is scheduled to be completed and opened for public in the fourth quarter of 2020.
Mohamed Ali Al Khouri, Director of Public Parks Department at MME, said the Department is implementing a comprehensive plan aiming to increase the green areas in Qatar and planting more trees.He further clarified that various entities are coordinatingwith concerned authorities to allocate lands for construction of parks and plaza in all municipalities in Qatar to meet leisure needs of the people residing in different areas of the State. He also added that a land area of around 13,000 square meters is allocated for construction of a new green plaza in the West Bay area within Doha municipality.
Jassem Bin Najem Ali Al Khulaifi, a member of the Central Municipal Council –First Constituency, indicated that the State of Qatar attaches great importance to increasing green areas and establishing parks and plazas. He added that this plaza will serve the people of the constituency, as it includes areas for walking and family seating areas,it will also encourage people to practice sports and have a healthy lifestyle, especially as it is located in a vital area near the Corniche.
He added “I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks and appreciation to Ashghal, represented by the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar, for their efforts in Beautification projects and their positive cooperation with the requirements of the people of the First Constituency areas."
Eng. Maryam Al-Kuwari, Project Design Manager at the Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar at Ashghal, said that the salient feature of the plaza’s design is inspired by Qatari postage stamps, which will create the first impression among the visitor as a spatial and functional extension of the Q-Post building because of its important place in the hearts of the people of Qatar over the past years.
The plaza will consist of three interconnected postal stamps forming harmonious lines and open spaces to be used for conducting events and festivals at a distinguished location in the heart of the city near Q-Post building and Doha Corniche, with proximity to Corniche Metro Station.
The project also includes provision of service buildings that include prayer hall and washrooms.
Infrastructure works will be implemented including construction of sewage networks, irrigation lines, electricity line and installation of Lighting poles and others. Eng. Maryam Al-Kuwari also clarified that visitors to Post Office Plaza can use the car parks designated for the post office building adjacent to the plaza.
It is noteworthy that the Post Office Plaza Project is a people with special needs friendly project with additional ramps and dedicated parking spaces connected to the plaza.
Supervisory Committee of Beautification of Roads and Public Places in Qatar
The committee's projects aim to create a sustainable environment through implementing several ventures including construction of central public parks, provision of dedicated paths for pedestrians and bicycles, provision of areas with street furniture, beautification lights, developing Doha Corniche and some other beaches, developing Doha Downtown area by revitalizing some of the main roads and internal streets, important residential areas and open plazas. The committee also aims to contribute in creating a community environment with a distinctive identity through participating community members in artworks and tree plantation, in coordination with several ministries and other government entities of the state.
