The Maharashtra Mandal Qatar (MMQ), a non profit socio-cultural organisation affiliated to the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), working under the aegis of Embassy of India in Qatar, arranged chartered flights for Mumbai and Nagpur in India to send stranded people from the state of Maharashtra back home. The chartered flights, which were the first to Maharshtra, took off on Friday.
“We arranged the chartered flights in coordination with the Indian Embassy and the ICC to help people of Maharashtra travel back home. People were chosen from the list registered with the Indian Embassy in Doha and preference was given to the most needy ones, such as medical emergency cases, pregnant women and senior citizens”, said MMQ President Mrs Neelambari Sushant Savardekar.
Savardekar added: “We tried our best to keep the flight rates affordable and also provided free tickets to the most needy ones, arranged free transport for them to the airport and helped them financially to land safely home with the support of ICC’s Vice President Vinod Nair.”
It is worth mentioning that the managing committee of Maharashtra Mandal Qatar initially planned three flights and more, if necessary, to send stranded workers home.
Among those from MMQ who played significant role in the entire operation were Santosh Salunkhe, Sanjay Patil, Parag Sonawane, Atul Deswandikar, Ms Shweta Koshti, Sujit Khanlosker, Nilesh Parsekar, Sagar Mangaonkar and a number of hardworking volunteers.
They received utmost support from Vinodji Nair and Dr. Nayana Wagh, educational & cultural head of ICC.
A total of about 500 stranded people, mainly from Maharashtra, are benefiting from the mandal’s relief efforts for the community. They have thanked the managing committee of the organisation for the support extended to them in these critical times.
“We received full support from Indian Embassy and Ambassador HE P Kumaran, Counselling Officer Rajesh Kamble and the ICC management, especially ICC Vice President Vinod Nair and Dr Nayana Wagh in the repatriation exercise”, said Mrs Savardekar, while expressing her gratitude to the community leaders for support.
