The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned people in Qatar against fraudsters orchestrating “scholarship scams” to steal their money.
Quoting a source in the Consular Affairs Department, a QNA report said the scam was being operated by fraudsters pretending to be employees of Qatari embassies abroad. They would claim that the scholarships were being offer by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for citizens and residents in the Gulf countries and would even furnish website links, phone numbers and other such data to make their scam believable, the QNA report said.
As the scam progresses, the report said, the fraudsters would step up their game and bring in “US federal agents”. They would tell the unsuspecting victims that they were being probed for involvement in financial terrorist acts and would demand money to settle the problem, it added.
According to the report, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs doesn't offer scholarships as “it doesn't fall within its competence”.
