The checkpoints that were erected in Industrial Area to regulate entry and exit will be removed on Wednesday, when the second phase of easing the COVID-19 restrictions across Qatar begins, the Government Communications Office (GCO) said on Saturday.
"Within the framework of the implementation of the second phase of the plan to gradually lift the restrictions imposed in the State of Qatar as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the Permanent Committee for Industrial Area Affairs decided to cancel entry and exit points to and from the Industrial Area starting tomorrow, Wednesday 1 July, while continuing to implement preventive measures, including the wearing of masks, reduced bus capacity to half, and the download and activation of the Ehteraz application, in order to ensure the health and safety of the area’s residents, visitors, and community members," the GCO said in a statement.
"The easing of restrictions does not mean the virus has disappeared. All members of society should continue to take precautions and follow recommended guidelines to ensure the successful implementation of the gradual lifting of the restrictions imposed in the State of Qatar, with the aim of returning to normal life," the statement added.
Streets 1 to 32 of Industrial Area were locked down after a surge in the number of COVID-19 infections in the region. During the lockdown, thousands of people were tested for the virus and more than 6,500 individuals were transferred to quarantine facilities. Those who were suspected or confirmed to be infected with the virus were provided with free, high-quality healthcare.
In light of achieving the desired objectives of the partial closure, the Permanent Committee for Industrial Area Affairs eased restrictions by gradually opening and developing a system of entry and exit permits for a period of time.
The need to obtain a permit to enter or exit Industrial was scrapped on June 15, when the first phase of lifting COVID-19 curbs began. But checkpoints had remained active to ensure the health and safety of Industrial Area residents and members of the society.
