Qatar’s Central Radiation Laboratory has launched the first phase of a radiological field survey as part of this year’s Radioactive Environment Monitoring Programme.

The programme seeks to monitor the radiation levels in water, air and soil in Qatar.

The first phase of the survey includes reading radiation levels in the air, at a height of 1 metre from the ground, and in soil at different depths from different regions of the Eastern Coast, Radiological laboratory official Engineer Bader Al Saadi has said.

This will help researchers create a database of radiation levels in Qatar and prepare strategies to deal with radiological and nuclear emergencies. Around 20 samples will be taken and studied in the first phase.

The project is expected to cover more than 100 sites in Qatar and comes within the framework of integrating data for early warning network stations.
