The Al Sadd Children's Emergency Center of the Hamad Medical Corporation has been providing high-quality care for children infected with coronavirus (COVID-19) since it was designated as a treatment facility for children with the virus.
According to the reality in Qatar and the world, people of all ages can develop COVID-19, but evidence so far shows that very few children suffer from severe symptoms if they are infected, according to Dr. Mohamed Al-Amri, Acting Head of Pediatrics and Director of Children's Emergency Centers.
He added that this is encouraging, but does not mean that children are immunized against the virus, as there are a number of children who are admitted to the Al Saad Emergency Center as a result of Covid-19 symptoms ranging from moderate to severe.
The allocation of the Al Sadd Center for Children’s Emergency as a facility for treating Covid-19 is part of the comprehensive plan for the health care sector to ensure that COVID-19 patients from children receive the best possible medical care, as the Al Sadd Center is a modern and advanced medical center that allows the Hamad Medical Corporation to provide high-quality care to patients.
Dr Amri explained that patient data in Qatar show that more than 60 percent of people with Covid-19 are between 25 to 44 years old, but about 3 to 4 percent of positive cases are confirmed for children under the age of 14 years.
He stated that for this reason, it is extremely important for children to take precautions to protect themselves from COVID-19, and this includes washing their hands regularly, not touching their eyes, nose, and mouth and adhering to the physical spacing guidelines.
He also stressed that although children are less likely to have severe symptoms from the virus, they can, like everyone else, pass the virus on to other family members.
He said that children can play the role of COVID-19 virus carriers and pass the virus on to family members or elderly relatives who may have chronic conditions and are more likely to have severe symptoms.
And he explained that, as with many positive cases infected with COVID-19 in Qatar, children affected with Covid-19 may be asymptomatic and for this reason it is important that all children stay at home as much as possible even if they appear healthy, stressing the need to adhere to the recommendations and guidelines of social and physical spacing  .
Dr Amri indicated that it may be difficult for many children to understand the way in which their lives have changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, stressing the need for the family and caregivers enough time to explain what is happening to children and answer any questions they may want to ask.
