As the Africa Day was marked on Monday, the African Women’s Diplomatic Group has appreciated Qatar for its support to African countries during the coronavirus diseases (COVID-19) pandemic.
The theme for Africa Day 2020 is, “Silencing The Guns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa's Development and Intensifying the Fight against the COVID-19 Pandemic” and the government of Qatar is contributing greatly to moving the aspirations of this theme to realities.
In a statement on behalf of the group, the President of the Group who is the spouse of the South African Ambassador to Qatar Anika Moosa said, “In our virtual celebration, we want to convey our appreciation and gratitude to the Government of Qatar for the continued attention the State of Qatar is paying to Africa.   His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, has made several tours to various countries in Africa; Qatar has hosted many leaders in Doha; and His Highness discussed a wide range of issues and has signed many investment and economic pacts, memoranda and other initiatives.  All of this is aimed at boosting economic and development partnerships in Africa. We appreciate the generosity of Qatar for the shipments of urgent medical aid, which included masks and personal protective equipment for medical staff, to several African countries to support their efforts to counter and contain the outbreak of Covid-19.”
As a way of celebrating Africa Day, several African nationals; Africans in the diaspora as well as descendants of Africa, organised commemorative cultural events that highlighted the vibrancy of African cultures, foods, and traditions. Most of these will be virtual events due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Moosa further said that the group also wished to express its gratitude to the Qatar and also share its excitement and aspirations for Africa with citizens and residents of Qatar as they celebrated Africa Day on Monday. “The group also wishes to convey its congratulations and best wishes for good health and happiness to the government of Qatar, citizens and residents  on the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr.”
It is worth to note that Africa Day is observed annually on May 25, to commemorate the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) which was created on 25 May 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The day provides an opportunity to recite the political and socio-economic achievements of African governments it’s citizens.
