Qatar’s National Epidemic Preparation Committee Co-chairman Dr Abdullatif al Khal blamed the slackness in exercising social distancing for a dramatic increase in COVID-19 cases in the past seven days.
Addressing a press conference in Doha on Thursday, Dr Khal said although the majority of new COVID-19 cases in Qatar are that of expatriate workers, the number of COVID-19 infections among Qataris and residents is 50 percent more than what it was two weeks ago. According to him, Iftar assemblies during the holy month of Ramadan seem to have tempered the public will to maintain physical distance with one another.

Although the virus transmission has entered its peak stage in Qatar, the daily cases haven't reached the peak point yet, Dr Khal warned, indicating that the cases will continue to rise before they begin to decline.
The doctor said there was significant increase in the number of examinations conducted to identify positive cases. More than 7,000 samples are tested each day and some patients are examined more than once, he added.
