All shops will stay closed and commercial activities suspended on Fridays and Saturdays until further notice, Qatar’s Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz al Thani decided on Wednesday.
Food and catering stores, pharmacies and restaurants providing home-deliveries and takeaways have been exempted from the decision.
The cabinet meeting was held remotely through video conferencing amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Announcing the cabinet decisions, Minister of Justice and Acting Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs HE Dr Issa bin Saad al Jafali al Nuaimi said the weekend closure of shops was meant to complement measures taken by the administration to contain the spread of COVID-19.
At the meeting, the Minister of Public Health HE Dr Hanan Mohammed al Kuwari apprised the cabinet members of the latest developments on the coronavirus situation in Qatar and steps taken to mitigate the outbreak.
She also impressed the cabinet upon the hard work of the country’s healthcare system, especially of the doctors and other medical professionals and the cooperation extended by various ministries in combatting the virus.
Nuaimi said the cabinet called on citizens and residents to stay indoors and not go out unless for a necessity.
