The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has completed the relocation works of the well-known Pearl Monument to the previously known Al Fardah Roundabout in Al Wakra Old Souq adjacent to Al Wakra port.
The relocation works were accomplished in collaboration with the Private Engineering Office (PEO), as part of the expressway project of the upgrade of Al Wakra Main Road.
Pearl Monument has been reinstalled to enable the reconstruction the Pearl Roundabout into a signal-controlled intersection, as part of Al Wakra Main Road Upgrade Project.
Ashghal's approach has met with willingness and proposals of the citizens in Al-Wakra to maintain and preserve the pearl monument and maintain it as landmark of Al Wakra city.
The decision to restore the Pearl Monument and relocate in Old Souq Al Wakra is to highlight the coastal nature of the city along with its distinct heritage, societal characteristics and history.
Ashghal’ strategy stems from the keenness to preserve the Heritage in parallel with the continued implementation of infrastructure plans in different locations of the State of Qatar, in collaboration with the competent authorities.
Constructed in the eighties of last century, the Qatari designer have inspired the design and build of the monument from the coastal tranquil nature of Al Wakra city.
It is noteworthy that the Pearl monument is a symbolic for residents of Wakra city as it reflects the pearl diving heritage of the city.
On this occasion, Engineer Saleh Al Sheiba, from Highway Projects Department, said: "The installation of shell on the concrete structure requires adopting a precise mechanism in its optimal lifting and installation. A metallic base has been manufactured for fixing the shells on the structure to ensure accurate installation considering the heavy weight of two shells that mounts 12 tons."
Al Sheiba added: "Ashghal in collaboration with the competent authorities and the General Directorate of traffic has undertaken the adequate traffic measurements to ensure the smooth traffic movement during the relocation process of the monument and throughout the project implementation period."
For his part, Engineer Nouh Al Joof, from the at Ashghal: from Highway Projects Department, said: “The process of relocating the monument required undertaking some maintenance work to restore some parts that were affected by the transportation process to ensure that they remain for the longest possible period.  Following the identification of the new location, we had to find technical solutions to overcome the ground water high level.”
The Public Works Authority “Ashghal” has commenced the construction works for the conversion of roundabouts all over Al Wakra main Road to signalized Junction, following the successful opening of Wakra tunnel and its intersection that extends from Ras Bu Funtas and Barwa City towards the roundabout known as Pearl Roundabout.
Ashghal’s construction works continues at the upgrade of Al Wakraj Main Road, which extends all over 5.5 km from the previously known as Pearl Roundabout to Woqod station, located towards Messaieed city. Construction works include the conversion of the three roundabouts of; Pearl, Ooredoo and Afja roundabout (known as Jabal roundabout) to signalized intersections. Additionally, two new signalized intersctions will be constructed in Al Razi street and towards  Al Wukair Road.
