The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has announced that it has taken all necessary precautions to cope with the emerging corona virus, which appeared in China and moved to several countries.
The MoPH said it is continuously monitoring the situation regarding the new corona virus. No cases have been reported in Qatar so far, it said.
The National Committee for Epidemiology held a meeting on Wednesday to take stock of the situation. The meeting was attended by representatives from MoPH, Hamad Medical Corporation and the Primary Health Care Foundation, Hamad International Airport and Qatar Airways. The meeting discussed taking necessary precautions to prevent the transmission of infection by travellers coming to Qatar.
The committee issued recommendations that included raising the alert level for monitoring suspected cases at the local and global levels in coordination with the World Health Organization.
The MoPH issued guidelines advising all hospitals and health facilities in the country to report any suspected respiratory infections, especially for travellers returning from countries where the disease is spread, within a 14-day period of their arrival. The National Committee for Epidemiology has approved the application of thermal examination at Hamad International Airport to all travellers coming from China, while raising awareness among travellers about the symptoms of pneumonia, including high temperature, coughing and difficulty in breathing.
The MoPH advised people to avoid unnecessary travel to cities where the virus is active in China, as well as to avoid close contact with animals in the affected areas and not to mix closely with people who show symptoms of respiratory infections.
It urged people to wash hands with soap and water.
It is noteworthy that the emerging virus is similar to many coronaviruses that are transmitted from animal to human, as the severity of the disease ranges from mild to moderate symptoms in the majority of infected persons.
The rapid response team of MoPH operates round the clock and receives communications or inquiries related to communicable diseases on the hotlines numbers 66740948 or 66740951.
