Food samples taken from the home of a family in Qatar hospitalised with symptoms of food-poisoning did not show the presence of botulinum bacteria, the Ministry of Public Health said on Tuesday.
Samples collected from the local market of the same food found in the home also did not show botulinum contamination, the ministry added.
However, the victims — a man, his daughter and son — have been given anti-botulinum drug and are recuperating in a hospital in Qatar, MoPH said.
They were admitted to the hospital with symptoms consistent with botulism, a serious illness caused by a toxin secreted by botulinum bacteria found in contaminated food items, particularly in canned goods.
The toxin attacks the body’s nerves and causes weakness in facial muscles, blurred vision and difficulty in breathing among other symptoms
The ministry said technical teams that inspected the house of the victims observed unsafe food practices there.
MoPH has called on the public to purchase food products from reliable sources. It has emphasised the need for proper preparation and safe storage of food.
Dispose of expired food items immediately and preserve food items according to their thermal needs, it added.
