The structure of the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) might have to change in the near future to face upcoming challenges, the Emir of Kuwait HH Sheikh Sabah al Ahmad al Jaber al Sabah has said.
The Kuwait Emir's remarks came as the GCC summit in Kuwait City concluded on Tuesday instead of Wednesday, with a declaration emphasising the crucial role of the bloc in maintaining the security and stability of the region.
The Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani, who headed an official Qatari delegation, participated in the summit.
"We might change the system of the GCC to have mechanisms to better face challenges," the Kuwait Emir said, referring to the GCC crisis that began on June 5.
The Kuwait Emir also hinted at the possibility of setting up a task force to deal with future rifts within the GCC."We have been convulsed in the past six months by painful and negative developments... but we managed to achieve calm," the Kuwait Emir said.
Upon his return from Kuwait, the Emir sent a cable to the Kuwait Emir, praising his efforts to enhance cooperation and solidarity among GCC countries and to consolidate the security and stability of the region.
The Emir affirmed that Qatar will spare no effort to achieve the best interests of the people of the Gulf, Arab world and Islamic nations, asking Almighty Allah to grant the Emir of Kuwait the best of health, prosperity and progress for Kuwait under his wise leadership.
The Kuwait Declaration issued at the end of the summit stressed the crucial role of the GCC in maintaining security and stability of the region, combating terrorist organisations and extremist ideology in defence of Arab values and the principles of the Islamic religion based on moderation and tolerance.
The declaration read out by GCC Secretary-General Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid al Zayani stressed the importance of adhering to the GCC process.
It also stressed the importance of enhancing collective action to face challenges and fortifying the GCC countries against their repercussions to meet the aspirations of GCC citizens.
The declaration called on writers and thinkers to play a constructive and effective role in strengthening the GCC process to achieve the common interests of the member countries and their people.
