HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Honorary President of Qatar University Alumni Association (QUAA), congratulated Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani for being honoured with Distinguished Alumni Award at the 9th Qatar University 2017 Alumni Reunion on Tuesday.
In her speech, Sheikha Moza hailed Sheikh Mohammed for his outstanding role as the head of Qatari diplomacy and his ability to address the claims of the siege countries effectively.
The ceremony was attended by several ministers and officials as well as more than 1,500 alumni, especially the batches from 1980 till 1990.
"I am delighted to be present today among a new generation of governors who graduated from Qatar University, and Sheikh Mohammed, the guest of honour today, is a symbol of that generation. Times of crises test wills, competencies and capabilities, and Sheikh Mohammed embodies all these qualities in the best way, especially in his response to claims from the blockading countries," Sheikha Moza said.
Minister of Energy and Industry HE Dr Mohammed bin Saleh al Sada said the alumni association serves as a link that binds together thousands of graduates from all over the world and brings them closer to their alma mater.
Sada said,"I take pride in QU as the university provided the labour market in Qatar and beyond with around 41,000 graduates who are well equipped with the necessary skills and values and who serve their countries in the best way. Many of QU outstanding alumni became leaders in the Qatari society, and they contribute to the country's development and growth."
QU President Dr Hassan al Derham said since its inception, QU is committed to graduating highly-qualified individuals to join leadership ranks in the labour market.
"QU accomplished many accreditation achievements for its colleges and programmes. Additionally, the organisation has been ranked 349 in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2018 and 37 in the QS Top 50 Under-50 2018 ranking among the world's leading young universities founded less than 50 years ago. These achievements are the result of the ongoing support provided by the country's wise leadership to QU," Derham said.
The programme featured a short film screening on the association, a live operetta on 'The Story of a Nation' performed by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, an exhibition for caricaturists from Qatar, Kuwait and Oman, and an exhibition themed 'Souvenirs of a Graduate'.
Two speeches were also delivered at the ceremony by delegations from Kuwait and Oman, on behalf of the University's alumni from sisterly and friendly countries.
The event is organised annually by QU Alumni Relations Office in cooperation with Qatar University Alumni Association. The first Alumni Reunion ceremony was held in 2007.
