Kenyan national and defending title holder Christopher Ojwang Oketch was named this year's strongest expat at the Qatar's Strongest Man 2017 competition organised by Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) at Aspire Park on Friday.
Kenyan competitors clearly dominated the event, with the 2014 title holder, Kenyan Joseph Iroo Ekadeli, receiving the runners up trophy. Egypt's Mohammed Dweidar came third.
More than 1,500 spectators of various nationalities thronged the venue to cheer their favourite competitors.
The competition was designed to test the strength and endurance of the participants. The competitors were subjected to the challenges that included' the truck pull', 'the sand bag lift' 'the giant tyre lift', 'the farmers walk and 'Conan's wheel's push'.
Ibrahim al Hilal, Chairman of the Qatar's Strongest Man 2017 Organising Committee, said,"Keeping in mind the huge response of the public, we have extended this event by two days. We intend to make it an international event next year."
The winner, Christopher Oketch, said,"I am very satisfied with my overall performance and have managed to clear all of them within the stipulated time. Although there was a slight change in the format of the event I could successfully overcome it by sticking to the correct technique."
Besides winning the title, Oketch also won a car from the sponsors of the event while second and third runners up received QR20,000 and QR10,000, respectively.
