In what was a fruition of several months of discussions between Qatar and Japanese authorities under the guidance of Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) and the Japan Racing Association, the two nations on Sunday signed an agreement for import and export of racehorses.
The agreement was signed by the Head of Quarantine, Department of Animal Resources at the Ministry of Municipality & Environment Hussain Jibril al Yahri, and Director, Animal Health Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry & Fishery (MAFF), Food Safety & Consumer Affairs Bureau, Norio Kumagai.
Present at the signing were several dignitaries from both countries including Abdulla Jassim al Zeyara, Consul of the Qatar Embassy in Japan; Nasser Sherida al Kaabi, General Manager, QREC; and Kazui Ito, Director of Animal Health Division.
Issa bin Mohammed al Mohannadi, Chairman, QREC, said"It is a great honour for us to be a part of this new venture. Japan bred horses are now among the strongest and fastest in the world, with the sport ranking among one of the top four in the country. Working with Japan is one of the many undertakings that will establish Qatar as a leader in the trade of an exquisite calibre of race horses across the globe."
Nasser Sherida al Kaabi said,"By signing this agreement, Qatar takes another leap in nurturing our partnerships globally. We take great pleasure in this newly facilitated opportunity that will see racehorses being imported and exported mutually between the two countries. This will make headway for both Japan and Qatar when it comes to horse racing on an international platform."
The QREC was established in the early 1960s and was officially made public in 1975. The club is mandated with representing, promoting and advancing equine and equestrian initiatives from grassroots programmes to the international arena. Focused on equestrian sport and horse welfare, QREC is dedicated to promoting Qatar as a world class hub for horse racing and a leader in the pure Arabian breed.
