The Kerala Literary Award, instituted by Keralite expatriate forum Sanskriti, was conferred upon expatriate writer Sreedevi Vadakkedath, at a function in Doha, recently.

The award instituted by the forum in memory of noted writer late CV Sreeraman, is conferred upon Indian expatriate writers in the GCC region above the age of 18, for promoting Malayalam literature among Indian expatriates.

Noted journalist CP Aboobacker from Kerala presented the award to Sreedevi.

Speaking on the occasion, Aboobacker said that writers should be the torchbearers of democracy and constitutional rights. He said the challenges they are facing at present should be overcome by raising the social and political issues related to the general public.

CV Sreeraman is considered an outstanding writer in Malayalam, who won the prestigious Kendra Sahitya Academy Award and Kerala Sahitya Academy Award for his collections of short stories.

The award distribution ceremony also featured a variety of cultural programmes including a drama and songs by noted singer VT Murali from Kerala.

Others who attended the function included forum President AK Jaleel, General Secretary KK Sankaran, office-bearers PN Baburajan, Santhosh Thoonery, Gopalakrishnan and EM Sudhir.
