QATAR is set to host the 8th World Summit on Innovation in Education (WISE) with the participation of world leaders in education, technology, social entrepreneurship, global development, media and philanthropy, on Tuesday.
The three-day summit titled"Co-Exist, Co-Create: Learning to Live and Work Together" will see attendance of nearly 2,000 people from 100 countries. WISE has become a major international forum to discuss the future of education since its launch in 2009.
This year's WISE highlights education challenges in times of disruption and economic uncertainty. The role of education in the world will be the focus of the discussions, with sessions on media culture, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, social leadership, thinking through design, encouraging the adoption of correct educational options and other issues.
The conference will also feature the announcement of the 2017 WISE Education Award, the first of its kind to recognise the world's leading and outstanding contributions to education, whether individual or collective, for a team of up to six individuals.
The Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser will award a gold medal and a cash reward of $500,000 to the winner at the opening session on November 15.
This year, six out of 15 projects qualified for the finalists, due to their innovative approach to tackle the major challenges facing education, as well as their positive impact on society. These projects represent the United States, the United Kingdom, Tanzania, France And Spain.
WISE community comprises more than 9,000 active members in 152 countries who look for new solutions to the challenges facing the education system.
WISE is more than an annual summit because its main objective is to raise the educational level through a large and increasing number of annual periodic programmes.
The WISE seeks to highlight Qatar Foundation's role in encouraging young people to innovate in education. Over the past few years, WISE has strengthened its position as a global reference in the development of new approaches to education through the implementation of a range of leading programmes.
Among these programs is the 'Learners'Voice' launched at the 2010 session of the conference, with the main objective of enabling young people aged 18 to 25 to develop a project that addresses an urgent issue in education and to strengthen their abilities and develop their skills, providing them with the necessary knowledge to understand all aspects of education, and giving them an opportunity to share ideas and opinions in order to find radical solutions to the problems experienced by the sector around the world.
The number of participants in 'Learners'Voice' programme since the first session has reached 185 young men and women, including 100 participants during the first to fifth sessions, while 34 young men and women participated in the sixth session, and the seventh session selected 26 participants from 25 countries, the current session selected 25 educators representing 19 countries. The new group will start its journey through the 'Learners'Voice' programme at the 2017 WISE in Doha.
The WISE Education Award aims to raise global awareness of the pivotal role of education in all societies and to create a platform for innovative and practical solutions that will help overcome some of the challenges facing education around the world.
Launched in 2011 at the initiative of HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the award celebrates the individual or collective achievement of a team of up to six people who have made outstanding international contributions in the education sector.
There is also the WISE Accelerated Development Program, which supports and develops innovative educational initiatives that are highly scalable and effective. The programme involves supervisors and qualified partners with expertise in supporting projects and ensuring their development through effective and concrete strategies.
