THE three-member German Jazz group FAVO kick-started the 4th Katara European Jazz Festival by presenting an interesting pattern of melody and harmony. In addition, the singing of Sander De Winne was a treat for the jazz lovers of Doha.
From Bobby McFerrin's number to Beatles' 'Black Bird' and from a Jazz adaptation of a German tune to a Latino jazz hip-hop number there was everything in the palette of FAVO. The founder of the group saxophonist Volker Schlott and Falk Breitkreuz on bass clarinet created a magical sound.
Most of the pieces played by FAVO were their original compositions while they also presented some of the adaptations of A Piazolla, J S Bach and others.
The group also included in their programme an African rendition played over an African instrument called Mbira that clearly indicated strong African influences over their music.
The Hilda Kazasyan Band from Bulgaria also regaled audience with their performance. The band presented some of the popular numbers such as 'Fever' and was received well by the audience.
Hilda Kazasyan, the founder vocalist of the band, captivated audience with her fluid vocal control.
Her band consisted of Hristo Yotsov on percussions, JivkoPetrov on piano and Dimitar Karamfilov on bass. Together they created a sound that was unique and jazzy.
Hilda comes from a well-known family of musicians and her father was a well-known musician in Bulgaria. Her strong bonding with her father was clearly visible when she played a dedication to her father during the concert.
"I am extremely honoured to be part of this event. I was certainly not expecting such a response from the audience in this region," she told Qatar Tribune after the concert.
The Jazz festival will continue until November 12. Concerts will be held every evening in which groups from different participating European countries will perform. The venue of the concert is at Katara building 5. Entry is free to the public.
