The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al Thani, on Wednesday approved a draft law, which allows private parties to run paid parking lots with prior approval from authorities.
According to the law, building permits will be denied if the designs do not include car parking as per the prescribed technical specifications and standards.
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) will be the nodal agency for specifying public parking areas that can be used with or without fee. The ministry will also organise and manage the public parking areas in coordination with the concerned authorities in the state.
According to the law, the ministry can also authorise other entities to manage public and private parking spaces.
The Cabinet also approved a draft law on amending some provisions of the Law No 25 of 2005 on trade registration and decided to refer it to the Advisory Council. It also approved a draft law to amend some provisions of the Law No 5 of 2015 on commercial, industrial and public shops and street vendors, and decided to refer it to the Advisory Council.
These draft laws, prepared by the Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC), aim to facilitate investors and businesses.
Under the amendment, the licensing period of a business at the commercial register will be set by a Cabinet decision based on the suggestion of the minister and the nature of the business.
The Cabinet also ratified the protocol for eliminating the trade of illegal tobacco products in the country in compliance with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
