THE increased number of complaints submitted to the Compensation Claims Committee by the students affected by the blockade has forced the committee to look for solutions. The committee wants to ensure that the students do not miss the academic year.
The officials of the committee have discussed the issue with the concerned authorities, namely the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MEHE), Qatar University (QU), the Compensation Claims Committee, and the Community College.
QU has recently accepted about 100 of these students as visiting students and facilitated their admission process. Community College is also considering giving admission to some of the students, while the MEHE is planning to send the Qatari students whose studies got disrupted in Egypt, especially law students, to Jordan to complete their studies.
A source at the committee said it has recently received a spate of complaints from students affected by the blockade especially those who were studying in Egyptian universities, as they could not travel to the country to complete their studies, especially since a security approval is now needed to obtain the visa.
The source said the committee has begun sorting out the complaints and communicated with education officials to discuss possible solutions for the affected students and save their academic year. Education officials, said the sources, have already started working out solutions for the affected students.
QU President Dr Hassan al Derham said QU has received about100 students out of a total of 200 applicants. The MEHE and Community College are coordinating plans to accommodate the rest of the affected students, he added.
Dr Derham said QU is receiving a large number of Qatari students returning from the siege countries after they got expelled from the universities there.
He pointed out that the university is studying each case individually while applying exceptional procedures.
QU and the concerned authorities in Qatar have being trying to communicate with universities in the siege countries to get the required documents of students but to no avail thus far.
He said students have been accommodated in disciplines like law, administration and Sharia according to the requirements earmarked by QU.
A preliminary plan was made to accept Qatari students affected by the blockade during the summer and autumn seasons as visiting students.
Earlier, QU had announced that it was preparing a mechanism to accommodate Qatari students affected by the blockade.
