IN what appears to be a major achievement for Qatar, the Al Wakra City has joined UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Education's Global Network of Learning cities, the Secretary-General of Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science (QNCECS) Dr Hamda al Sulaiti announced in Doha on Sunday.
Addressing a press conference jointly organised by QNCECS, Al Wakra Municipality and the College of North Atlantic Qatar (CNAQ) at the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Sulaiti praised the efforts of the parties that participated in preparing Al Wakra's nomination file for the Global Network of Learning Cities membership.
Sulaiti stressed that the UNESCO approved Al Wakra's membership since it met all the criteria required for the position through adopting a strategy of spreading awareness about the concepts of sustainability and partnership with the institutions of civil society, thus aligning with the Qatar National Vision 2030.
She added:"The project came as the State of Qatar and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment were keen on joining the Global Network of Learning Cities given its great value in reinforcing comprehensive learning within the educational community and achieving sustainable development in addition to adopting the best practices through exchanging expertise with the other learning cities."
Mansour Ajran al Bouainin, director of Al Wakra Municipality, noted that this achievement is a source of pride for Qatar and reflects global recognition of Qatar's prestigious position in the field of education and culture.
Bouainin said:"The strategy adopted by Al Wakra Municipality in raising awareness about sustainability and green buildings in the community, as well as teaching students their practical benefits helped the city get the coveted UNESCO honour."
Dr Ken MacLeod, president of CNAQ, expressed his joy in being a part of Al Wakra's success in joining more than 100 learning cities across 40 countries around the world.
He added:"As a result of the cooperation between CNAQ, QNCECS represented by Dr Hamda al Sulaiti and the UNESCO office in Doha, Al Wakra Municipality was urged to apply for the membership in UNESCO's Global Network of Learning Cities, and here we are celebrating this wonderful achievement."
Al Wakra Municipality stressed in its membership application on the importance of education, clean energy, managing resources wisely, and reinforcing sustainable development as a strategic goal for all members of society.
