Markets in Qatar have witnessed a significant drop in vegetable prices recently with the opening of more import routes with other countries.
A recently-opened hypermarket in Doha is selling potatoes for as low as QR1 and Turkish tomatoes for QR2 per kg.
Retail outlets have seen a high demand for vegetables as customers expressed their relief at the price drop after the Saudi-led blockade affected the imports of vegetables and fruits to the country driving their prices.
Ali al Masri, the outlet manager, told Qatar Tribune that the market is replete with all kinds of vegetables and his outlet sells fresh produce at competitive prices.
"We have more than enough stock and we import through Hamad Port from various countries. We have bananas at QR2.5 per kilo from the Philippines and carrots at QR1.75, and it is still profitable for us," Masri said.
He added that he has arranged a bigger display of the local crops in his store and more offers would be available soon for customers.
"Prices of some of the vegetables are even lower compared with the pre-blockade period," said Karima Hassan from Egypt while packing a bagful of tomatoes.
Sasin Dharhai, an India expatriate, said the price drop is a good sign, adding he is very happy to see the measures taken by the Qatari government.
