UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has assured the organisation's full support to Kuwaiti mediation efforts led by Emir of Kuwait HH Sheikh Sabah al Ahmad al Jaber al Sabah to resolve the ongoing Gulf crisis.
The UN chief, who was in Kuwait as part of his Gulf tour to help defuse the crisis that has followed an economic blockade on Qatar by Saudi Arabia and its allies, on Sunday met the Emir of Kuwait and thanked him for playing the role of mediator in the crisis.
The UN chief also met Marzouq Ali al Ghanim, the Speaker of the Kuwaiti National Assembly.
The two discussed several issues in the region, especially the Palestinian cause, the Syrian crisis and and combating terrorism.
Ghanim stressed the importance of the UN and its various agencies to play a bigger and more influential role in pushing Israel to comply with international resolutions regarding the rights of the Palestinian people.
