CASES of abuse reported by Ethiopian expatriates in Qatar have come down significantly since the new labour law came into effect in December last year, Ethiopian Ambassador to Qatar HE Mesganu Arga Moach has said.
"I see a substantial change since the new labour law was implemented. The law had a huge positive impact on the workers as it gave them the freedom to ask their employers for their rights," the ambassador told Qatar Tribune recently.
The ambassador said that they have welcomed the new improved law and he believed it would resolve many issues, especially with those companies that were not abiding by the law."Those companies which were not abiding by the law will have to improve. This will definitely support our nationals, as previously there were cases of abuse by the employers," the ambassador explained.
The ambassador thanked the Qatari government for the generous support it offers to the Ethiopian Embassy in Doha."The government authorities concerned have been cooperating with us to help resolve issues such as unpaid salaries. The government is very open and we are getting the necessary support," he said.
At present, there are over 22,000 Ethiopian nationals living in Qatar."We have quite industrious nationals working in different fields in Qatar. Our nationals are working and contributing towards the achievements of Qatar's goals," Moach said.
The ambassador added the impact of the recent high-profile visits from Qatar to Ethiopia is already being felt."Qatari businessmen are starting to invest in Ethiopia. This is a big achievement and will definitely have a positive impact," he elaborated.
