In a landmark achievement for infrastructure projects in Qatar, the first batch of the Doha Metro trains has arrived at Hamad Port two months ahead of schedule despite the ongoing Gulf crisis.
After a 21-day journey by sea from Kobe in Japan, the first four trains of the total 75 that will be serving the Doha Metro project, were welcomed by officials into Hamad Port on Saturday night, Qatar Rail said in a statement.
The remaining trains will arrive as per the schedule to start the testing process and will be ready in time for the first phase of operations by 2020, the statement added.
The trains will be transported to Qatar Rail's Al Wakra Depot where they will be reassembled and tested in readiness for the operational phase.
All the necessary tests will be conducted on Qatari soil to ensure the highest standards of safety are met under Qatar Rail's direct supervision.
The designs of the Doha Metro trains are an embodiment of Qatari heritage and culture combined with state-of-the-art technology.
Doha Metro is set to be one of the fastest driverless trains in the world and will be the fastest in the region ” able to reach a speed of 100 km per hour.

In total, 75 trains consisting of three cars, one of which will be for Gold and Family Class and two for Standard class will be delivered to Doha Metro: Gold will have 16 seats, Family 26 seats and Standard 88 seats.

The design is custom-made for the Doha Metro project and the interior is inspired by the progressive architecture present in Doha skyline, once again combining traditional and modern elements.
On project updates, Qatar Rail has recently announced that the progress of Doha Metro Phase 1 Programme now stands at approximately 62 percent. Most of the civil works have been finished, and the remaining civil works are expected to be completed by the year-end.
