In a victory for Qatar, the International Accreditation Committee of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) has rejected a complaint submitted by the Saudi-led bloc against the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC).
The GANHRI committee said the NHRC, has underlined that since the beginning of the Gulf crisis, it had played its part in the protection and promotion of human rights in accordance with the Paris Principles that govern the work of national human rights institutions.
The blockading countries filed a complaint on August 7 against the NHRC, requesting that appropriate action be taken to freeze the membership of the NHRC in the list of national human rights institutions, and called for a reclassification of the committee's A rank and downgrade and review of all activities of the NHRC before and during the crisis.
In a statement, NHRC Chairman Dr Ali bin Smaikh al Marri said this decision is a remedy for the victims of the siege and support for their cause.
"It is a victory not only for the NHRC, but also for all national human rights institutions and human rights defenders around the world. It is also a testimony to the high esteem in which the NHRC is held, and an affirmation of its independence and the credibility of its work," he said.
Marri thanked the GANHRI committee for supporting the work of the NHRC and its undying concern for its independence and credibility.
He thanked the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and all international human rights organisations for their condemnation of the violations and their cooperation with NHRC for the promotion and protection of human rights.
Marri also called on civil society organisations in the blockading countries to cooperate with the NHRC in addressing the violations. He stressed that the NHRC is continuing its campaign against the violations resulting from the siege and will intensify its efforts.
