AROUND 43 photographs depicting Qatar's rich architecture and landmarks are on display at an exhibition which opened at Building 19 of Katara Cultural Village on Thursday.
The exhibition titled 'Qatar Through Filipino Lenses', organised by the Philippine Embassy Doha, features works of 32 Doha-based Filipino photographers. The exhibition is part of the embassy's initiative to promote the Philippines and the Filipino culture among Qatar's cosmopolitan audience.
The collection was inaugurated by Philippine Ambassador to Qatar HE Alan Timbayan and Katara Human Resources Manager Saif al Dosari in the presence of Vietnam Ambassador HE Nguyen Hoang, Indonesian Ambassador HE Muhammad Basri Sidehabi and other guests.
Speaking on the occasion Ambassador Timbayan said,"It is with pleasure that I present to you today the creative and talented members of our community who are behind these beautiful photographs we are seeing today. It is through their eyes that we see Qatar's architecture, people and natural wonders. They present a unique perspective on Qatar by blending its history and growth. The photographs register Qatar's evolution as a country and as a society.
"We wish to thank Katara for their keen interest in working together to promote cultural activities and providing opportunities for artistic expression. We look forward to working with you again in the future under the ambit of our newly-signed Culture Cooperation Agreement."
Katara official Saif said,"The exhibition documents the features of Qatar through the lenses of the Filipino community living in Doha and also reflects the unity of Qatar's residents who live as one community despite coming from different countries and diverse cultural backgrounds.
"By holding exhibitions showcasing different cultures of the world, Katara seeks to build communication bridges between people cutting across their cultural backgrounds. It stems from our awareness that culture has its own language which unites countries regardless of their history or their geographical features."
The exhibition includes pictures of known landmarks in the country including the Museum of Islamic Art, Souq Waqif, Zubarah Fort and Torch Tower. Besides, there are photographs that capture the everyday activities in Qatar. Some of the featured photographs include a shot of a porter in Souq Waqif, spectacular images of Doha's skyline at night from Corniche and the beauty of Arabian horses.
"Filipino photo clubs are among the most active organisations in the community. We are very happy to showcase our works to a wider audience. We thank the Philippine Embassy and the management of Katara for this rare opportunity and we hope to take part in similar initiatives," said Victor Magnipes, one of the featured photographers and president of Pinoy Lente Qatar (PLQ).
Aside from PLQ, the Filipino photography clubs represented in the exhibition also include Doha Shutter Bugz, Picture in Action (PicAct), The Catchers Light Qatar, Doha Pinoy Shooters and Qamera Klub.
The photo exhibition will be open for public viewing until August 27, from 10am to 10pm.
