German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has said he and his US counterpart Rex Tillerson had taken a stand against the isolation of Qatar, which has been under siege for nearly two months now by Saudi Arabia and its allies.
"I and Tillerson worked together to find a solution to the crisis that would spare the Gulf states from the threat of war," Gabriel told Stern in an interview on Thursday.
"In recent months, the US Secretary of State has shown how European policy and US policy can be more integrated, and that both sides can work hand in hand on many issues," he said, adding that this was evident in dealing with the Gulf crisis.
The German foreign minister said the 13 demands made by the four countries for Qatar to comply were'provocative'.
During the first week of July, Gabriel visited Doha and met with his Qatari counterpart HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al Thani.
In a joint press conference in Doha, Gabriel had stressed the need to respect the sovereignty of Qatar and resolve the crisis through dialogue.
On the Libyan issue, the German minister called on the European countries, the Gulf states and Egypt to give priority to Libya's national interest.
