The first phase of the ambitious New Orbital Highway and Truck Route, which provides a direct link between the strategic Hamad Port and Al Khor, was opened to traffic on Sunday.
Motorists can now go from Mesaieed to Al Khor directly without having to pass through Doha, which will help faster movement of goods from Hamad Port.
The Phase 1, which covers a total length of 125km, has three stretches ” Mesaieed to G Ring Road (18 km - three lanes), Dukhan Highway to Al Shamal Road to Lusail (18 km - three lanes) and Dukhan Highway to Al Shamal Road up to Al Khor (33 km five lanes in each direction).
Almost two-thirds of the New Orbital Highway and Truck Route project is ready now. The QR 18.5 billion project with a total length of 195 km is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018.
The opening took place in the presence of Minister of Transport and Communications HE Jassim bin Saif al Sulaiti, Minister of Municipality and Environment HE Mohammed bin Abdullah al Rumaihi, Ashghal President Dr Eng Saad bin Ahmed al Muhannadi and Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) Hassan al Thawadi.

Sulaiti said the completion of the phase 1 of project will enhance goods traffic directly from Hamad Port to Al Shamal Road and then to Al Khor passing through the G Ring Road, the Industrial Area, Salwa Road and Dukhan Highway.
He said the road infrastructure and all related projects will be delivered on time.
"Orbital Highway is directly linked to a number of stadiums where World Cup 2022 will be held. It provides easy access to a number of sports facilities," he added.
These roads will improve the transport of merchandises and goods from the South to the North of the country, especially as the port accommodates more than 2,500 trucks per day.
Rumaihi said the Orbital Highway will serve many municipalities such as Al Rayyan, Al Khor and Al Thakhira, Al Wakra, Umm Slal and Al Sheehaniya.
It also provides easy access and direct connection between residential and commercial areas, mainly Logistics Village and Doha Industrial Area.
SC Secretary General Hassan al Thawadi has said the expressway network being implemented by Ashghal will ease the access of people to the 2022 World Cup stadiums.
Assistant President of the Public Works Authority Abdullah al Attiya said the projects will not be affected by the blockade and Ashghal is committed to implement projects as per the schedule. Alternative plans were put in place to realise the Qatar National Vision 2030, he added.
The new road will provide a free flowing traffic for trucks from Hamad Port to Al Khor. The road will have a capacity of 6,000 vehicles per hour in each direction and it will reduce travel time by about 50 percent.
The New Orbital Highway and Truck Route project includes construction of 21 main interchanges, including tunnels and flyovers that connect the Orbital Highway with the highways and main roads such as the G-Ring Road, Salwa Road, Dukhan Highway and Al Shamal Road.
The ministers and Ashghal officials also unveiled the image of 'Tamim the Glorious' on the occasion to express their solidarity with the leadership in this hour of crisis.
