A PLAY based on the novel of the late Malayalam writer Vaikom Muhammad Basheer staged in Doha recently by budding theatre artistes had the audience spellbound. The play was presented on Basheer’s death anniversary.
The play Mucheettukalikkarante Makal (The card player’s daughter), based on the novel by the same name, directed by Ganesh Babu Mayyil narrates a beautiful story in the colloquial tongue of northern Kerala. Filled with exceptional humour, the play revolves around the story in the novel but many popular characters from his other works also appears on stage.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune, Gangadharan Mattannoor who appeared in the lead in the play said, “The play was very well received, especially because it is in the colloquial tongue familiar to everyone in Kerala.” Vaikom Muhammad Basheer is regarded as a colossus in Malayalam literature. Translations of his works into other languages have won him worldwide acclaim. His notable works include Balyakalasakhi, Shabdangal, Pathummayude Aadu, Mathilukal, Ntuppuppakkoranendarnnu, Janmadinam and Anargha Nimisham. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1982. He is fondly remembered as the Beypore Sultan.
Artistes who came on stage to enact the play were Meghna Gangadharan, Manoj, Faizal Arikkattayil, Vinayan, Nidhin, Mansoor Orumanayoor, Vishnu, KK Parumala, Bijeesh, Ravi Maniyoor, Shafeeq, Unnimon Guruvayoor, Sherin, Hassan, Shivaprasad, Amith Radhakrishnan, Sarath,Nabeel, Niyas, Sanjay, Amritha, Revanth,Arsha, Neha, Ganga Gopi and Devika.
Rathish Mathradan, Vinayan, Ragi Vinod, Vinod Vallikkol, Shanjith and EM Sudhir formed part of the supporting cast backstage.
