CHAIRMAN of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Dr Ali bin Smaikh al Marri met with Assistant UN Secretary-General for Human Rights Andrew Gilmour in New York on Saturday.
During the meeting, Dr Marri renewed call for a swift move to stop the human rights violations that citizens and residents of Qatar are being subjected to. He stressed the importance of differentiating between humanitarian issues and politics. He noted that while the latter can eventually be resolved through diplomacy and mediation, violations of human rights cannot wait for political negotiations.
Dr Marri held separate meetings at the UN headquarters with heads of diplomatic missions of Switzerland, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ghana, Sweden and Liechtenstein and reviewed the developments of blockade against Qatar and its humanitarian implications.
He also briefed the officials on the committee's course of action during the crisis and its interaction with the United Nations agencies and international human rights groups in light of the violations of the blockade.
The wide-ranging movement of the NHRC in New York aimed to explain the blockade against Qatar and the damages it has caused, and international legal mechanisms that prevent the continuation of these violations. (QNA)
